“Jolene” was a hit single for Dolly Parton in 1973. The song is told from the perspective of a woman begging a seductive woman of whom she is envious not to steal her husband. It was covered a year ago by Miley Cyrus, giving it a new life and context.
Lyrically, the song is already tragic; the narrator is desperately trying to keep a husband who is muttering “Jolene” in his sleep as she cries. This slowed down version, recently posted on Reddit, has a melody that sounds like Tracy Chapman is fronting a country band after having recently killed someone. In the last line, the name “Jolene” echos away as if Jolene will never have the chance to make anyone jealous of her again. Here is the newly haunting song below:
